New recycling zone launched
An ‘on-the-go’ recycling zone for bottles and cans was launched last week at Thorpe Park in Surrey. The innovative scheme, developed in partnership between by Coca-Cola Enterprises and WRAP, will enable people to recycle when they’re out and about.
Launching the scheme, Minister for Waste Joan Ruddock said:
“With a target of increasing the national recycling rate to 40% by 2010, programmes such as the Recycling Zone from Coca-Cola are vital to the UK hitting its targets. I very much welcome this initiative and hope the Recycling Zone programme ensures people recycle more, at home and on-the-go.”
The zone at Thorpe Park comprises six recycle points. As well as encouraging people to recycle their empties there and then, the scheme also aims to remind people to think about recycling as part of their everyday life.
Most bottled and canned drinks are consumed outside the home, and the Government wants to ensure that the plastic, glass and aluminium containers don’t become waste in litter bins, but can be collected, recycled, and used again. Defra will shortly launch a new campaign to roll out more public recycling facilities and make it easier for everyone to recycle on-the-go.
