Suspension of cross compliance standard extended

Minister for the Environment, Phil Woolas has (on behalf of the Secretary of State) further extended the suspension of the cross compliance standard concerning the use of mechanical equipment and vehicles on waterlogged soils, to enable farmers to continue accessing their crops.

In view of the recent flooding the Secretary of State, Hilary Benn temporarily suspended the cross compliance standard nationwide. This has now been further extended until 10 September 2007. Any further exemption beyond this date, together with its scope, will be kept under review.

Farmers are asked to minimise their access to land when waterlogged and not initiate land activities (such as ploughing in preparation for sowing) as far as is reasonable, until suitable soil conditions prevail. Any damage to the soil should be recorded on the Soil Protection Review, and remedial action taken as soon as practicable.

The Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition standard, GAEC 3, prohibits farmers from carrying out mechanical operations and using motorised vehicles on waterlogged soil. The standard was put in place to protect soils from compaction and structural damage caused by using vehicles when the soil is too wet.
