Consultation: improving the efficiency of energy products

Energy efficient light globeImproving the performance of a range of energy-using products is at the heart of a Defra consultation launched today, which includes targets to phase out the least efficient products.

The consultation focuses on domestic products such as lighting and heating and non-domestic products such as air conditioning, information technology, pumps and motors – all of which account for significant proportion of energy use in the UK.

Analysis from Defra’s Market Transformation Programme suggests that raising product standards and working to remove the worst performers from the market will save up to 11 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2020, as well as saving householders and businesses money on their energy bills.

The consultation will last 12 weeks and will close on 27 February.
