Keep on fishing – That’s the message from UK Fisheries Minister Huw Irranca-Davies
News release
Ref: 244/09
Date: 21 October 2009
Plans to count the catches of sea anglers against fishing quotas were successfully overturned by UK Fisheries Minister Huw Irranca-Davies in Luxembourg yesterday.
The Commission had proposed that recreational fishermen’s catches would have to be recorded and counted against quota. After lengthy talks Mr Irranca-Davies successfully argued that it is far too early to make such a decision and that much more evidence is needed before any action should ever be considered.
Mr Irranca-Davies said:
“Fishing in the UK is one of our most popular past times and this win means you can all continue fishing without unnecessary interference from Government. My message is clear. We’ve worked hard for you so keep on fishing.”
