Science Advisory Council gather at London Zoo

Information bulletin

Ref: 242/09
Date: 20 October 2009

The Defra Science Advisory Council (SAC) held its fifth annual open meeting on Wednesday 14 Oct. The meeting took place at London Zoo and was open to members of the general public.

The SAC was established in 2004 to provide Defra with expert, independent advice on the strategic direction and priorities for Defra science. It also discusses the emerging science issues which the Department faces such as climate change, food security, animal health and flooding. The Council supports and challenges Defra’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Bob Watson.

The purpose of these annually organised meetings is to provide a window of opportunity for members of the public and interested stakeholders to see the Council at work, and learn more about its current and future work.

Bob Watson, Defra’s Chief Scientific Adviser said:

“I always find it really interesting when we hold these SAC open meetings as it gives those in the audience an opportunity to voice their opinion on what the council is currently working on and its future projects. We had a great turn out from the public which just shows what a challenging and interesting time it is for science in Defra.”

Chris Gaskell, the chair of the SAC said:

“The SAC plays a critical role in looking at the wider picture and challenging Defra on the science behind its policies.  Our role is becoming increasingly important as we look to find ways of adapting to climate change, promoting food security and combating animal diseases at a global level.  I think this meeting has shown that we are working well and there are many challenges ahead for Defra, government and the wider scientific community.”

Notes to editors

The Science Advisory Council (SAC) is the senior Non-departmental public body (NDPB) offering scientific advice to Defra's Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Bob Watson.  SAC helps guide Defra's scientific priorities and work across the complete range of the Department's policy activities, including horizon-scanning and long-range planning as well as dealing with immediate risks and opportunities.

The Science Advisory Council for Defra meets four times a year and holds an annual open meeting.  It is chaired by Professor Chris Gaskell, Principal of the Royal Agricultural College.
