Defra publishes the 2008 Report of the Chief Veterinary Officer

News Release

Ref: 198/09
Date: 28 August 2009

The 2008 Report of the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) on Animal Health provides a definite record of Government animal health and welfare activities across the UK.

The report is structured around the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain but covers activities across the UK and includes introductory overviews from the four UK administrations.  In 2008 there were fewer exotic disease outbreaks than 2007 but there was successful action on bluetongue, with voluntary vaccination in England and Wales and a compulsory campaign in Scotland, effective control of two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza and containment in quarantine of an incident of rabies in an imported puppy.

The report recognises the continued challenge of bovine tuberculosis in England and Wales. It highlights the work of national administrations with stakeholders to develop long term control strategies with view to eradication of the disease.

In the coming year, Defra will be reviewing whether there is a continuing need for an Annual CVO report, given the large amount of information now provided electronically on its websites and in the annual reports of the national administrations and delivery partners. Views are invited and can be sent to gvs@defra.gsi.gov.uk.
