Chair designate of marine management organisation named

Christopher Parry has been appointed Chair Designate of the new Marine Management Organisation (MMO), an independent body to regulate and manage the sea around England.

Mr Parry will become Chair of the MMO formally following successful passage of the Marine and Coastal Access Bill currently going through Parliament.

Mr Parry has had a distinguished naval career spanning 30 years, including active service in Northern Ireland, the Falklands and the Gulf, and subsequently went on to hold director and then Director-General roles at Ministry of Defence.

He has been appointed for three years from the date when the MMO is established, and prior to that date will act as Chair Designate.

He will be paid £90,000 a year as chair designate pro rata, based on ten days’ work a month.

This appointment has been made by the Secretary of State in accordance with guidance issued by the Office for the Commissioner for Public Appointments. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
