External capability report and BBSRC report published

INFORMATION BULLETIN

Ref: 115/09
Date: 12 May 2009

Today, Defra published its External Evidence Capability Review, which was undertaken to see what science resources Defra has available to meet its strategic requirements now and into the future.

The report is an independent assessment of strategically important capabilities.  In this context “capability” refers to facilities, expertise, networks and long term research.  This is Defra’s first attempt to gather this sort of information together across such a diverse range of policy areas.

This is being published at the same time as the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) review of Defra’s buildings and laboratories which work on agricultural science.

Defra expects the reports to influence the Department’s future planning and strategic management. In particular outputs will inform Defra’s:

    1. Strategy towards future science investment, feeding in to the department’s upcoming Evidence Investment Strategy;
    2. Strategic discussions with other funders, especially the Research Councils.
