Eves Review consultation summary
Defra has today published a summary of responses to the consultation on the Eves Review of the Animal Health and Welfare Delivery Landscape in England, and an action plan for taking forward Eves’ recommendations.
This review, led by David Eves CB, examined how animal health and welfare policies are delivered across the country. This currently involves a range of organisations such as Animal Health, the Meat Hygiene Service, the Rural Payments Agency and local authorities. The review made several recommendations on where improvements could be made, including closer working between the delivery bodies. This would contribute to one of the key themes of the Animal Health and Welfare Strategy - delivering and enforcing animal health and welfare standards effectively.
Following the consultation, Defra aims to continue to improve delivery with the help of Eves’ recommendations. In particular:
-
Animal Health is leading a programme to strengthen current arrangements for the enforcement of animal health and welfare regulations by local authorities, with the aim of improving all local authorities to the standard of the better performers.
-
Defra will draft legislation to remove the legal barriers to cross-boundary work between local authorities.
-
Defra will involve delivery partners at an early stage in making or revising policy as well as engaging with stakeholders to help us achieve better policy.
