New salmonella control requirements
New legislation comes into force today on controlling salmonella in breeding flocks of domestic fowl.
The Poultry Breeding Flocks and Hatcheries (England) Order 2007 implements a National Control Programme (NCP), which introduces amended sampling and testing requirements required by EU regulations.
The aim is for no more than 1% of breeding flocks with more than 250 birds to remain positive for Salmonellas of human health significance by the end of 2009.
These measures replace and enhance existing controls in the Poultry Breeding Flocks Order 1993. Operators will also have to meet minimum sampling requirements to verify the achievement of the target, and to take special measures in the event that salmonella is discovered.
A guidance booklet has been sent to all operators affected by the new requirements.
