SedNet has recently published Sediment Management at the River Basin Scale. This reviews some of the key requirements and challenges facing scientists, river basin managers, and policy makers for sustainable sediment management at the river basin scale, and puts forward important recommendations. This volume is also available as part of the 4-volume set (ISBN 0444519599)
Contents:
- Chapter 1 - Sediment behaviour, functions and management in river basins (P.N. Owens).
- Chapter 2 - Conceptual and assessment frameworks for sediment management at the river basin scale (S. White, S. Apitz).
- Chapter 3 - Regulatory frameworks for sediment management (S.T. Casper).
- Chapter 4 - Sediment and contaminant sources and transfers in river basins (K.G. Taylor et al.).
- Chapter 5 - Decision support tools for sediment management (M. van der Perk et al.).
- Chapter 6 - Costs and benefits of sediment management (A.F.L. Slob et al.).
- Chapter 7 - Sediment management and stakeholder involvement (A.F.L. Slob et al.).
- Chapter 8 - Sediment management at the river basin scale (P.N. Owens et al.).

The US Army Corps in conjunction with the EPA (environment Protection Agency) has just published the outcomes of a workshop (The Four Rs of Environmental Dredging: Resuspension, Release, Residual, and Risk) held at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Waterways Experiment Station, in Vicksburg, MS, in April of 2006. Fifty experts from government, the private sector, and academia participated in the workshop, which focused on four issues relevant to environmental dredging: (1) sediment resuspension resulting from dredging operations, (2) release, of contaminants from bedded and suspended sediments in connection, with dredging, (3) residual contaminated sediment produced by and/or remaining after dredging, and (4) the environmental risks that are the target, of and associated with dredging. The report can be downloaded at http://www.smwg.org/

Project Co-ordinator to present project to the UK Major Ports Group/British Ports Association Environment Policy Group meeting, 13th March, 2008, London. Kevin Black has been invited to present the project to members of the Environment Policy Group of the UK Major Ports Group/British Ports Association at the BPA HQ (Africa House, 64-78 Kingsway, London WC2B 6AH) on 13th March. The United Kingdom Major Ports Group Limited (UKMPG) is the trade association which represents most of the larger commercial ports in the United Kingdom. It has 9 members who between them operate 41 ports which account for over 70% of the tonnage handled in UK ports, and the British Ports Association exists to represent the interests of its 89 full members, and numerous associate members, to the United Kingdom and devolved Governments, the European Union and numerous national and international bodies. Kevin, who will be attending the meeting with Defra representative Andy Greaves, aims to describes the terms of reference of the project and its development, including a summary of work completed to date and a glimpse into this year's project activities. This meeting presents an ideal opportunity for the project to enter a constructive dialogue with the ports community, and a chance to discuss the role for ports and harbours both as consultees and end-users.

Programme Co-ordinator forges links with University -
Kevin Black, the project co-ordinator has been driving forward a dialogue with Professor Bob Kalin of Strathclyde University. Professor Kalin is active in the field of contaminated marine sediments. His work ranges from site specific biogeochemistry of contaminated groundwater (including the engineering design of sustainable remediation methods) to development of new enhanced in-situ remediation methods that manage sustainable risk. These research interests are closely allied to Work Package 4 of the Defra project, and there is considerable scope to develop the synergies within the University to the benefit of the project. Professor Kalin demonstrated an active interest in the project, and would be delighted to act as an Expert Group member and to review the outputs of the project. In addition, Kalin is a scientific committee member for the 4th International Symposium on contaminated sediments to be hosted by Strathclyde University, at which the project team members are being encouraged to present their work.
