Marine Fisheries: Conservation

Fisheries management is concerned with conserving fish stocks and their habitat and with minimising the impact of fishing on other species (such as fish that are not exploited commercially, cetaceans and sea birds) and their habitats.

Fishing in the waters around the UK and other European Union countries are managed under the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The UK agrees with the European Commission that the CFP has not succeeded in achieving sustainable fisheries management and has welcomed the Commission's proposal for reform. The discussion of these proposals provides an opportunity to improve those parts that have not worked well, while maintaining those that have. Information on the background to the proposals for reform and new EC legislation that is proposed or has already been agreed, is available:

A consultation was carried out in 2002 to gather the views of interested parties in order to inform the UK Government's response to the proposals.
