UK Location Programme

UK Location Programme: Scope

The scope of works is to build and develop a national infrastructure for the reuse and sharing of location information, based on a framework of common data and service standards, the means of publishing and collaboration.

The UK Location Programme is supported by a robust governance and leadership framework, which is led by the Location Council.

Background - the INSPIRE Directive

The INSPIRE  (INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in the European community) Directive looks to create an infrastructure for Europe to ensure that reference geographies and environmental location data is produced using interoperable standards as well as increasing efficiencies in sharing this data with users across government, commerce, academia or members of the public.

The INSPIRE consultation document and impact assessment were launched in the UK on March 3rd and closed on 26th May 2009. See Consultation on the transposition of the INSPIRE Directive.

A high level statement of INSPIRE policy objectives has been provided to Defra Legal as part of commissioning the INSPIRE Statutory Instrument.  Work on the statutory instruments is ongoing and these will be released in the summer or early autumn depending on feedback from the consultation document. The transposition project team are now working with the UK Location Programme Delivery Board.
