Bee Health - Research and Development

In addition to expenditure with CSL as part of the Bee Health Programme, Defra also funds R&D to support bee health work so that it may benefit both beekeepers and those farmers and growers who use bees for pollination. The balance and nature of our R&D spend aims to underpin Defra's bee health policy to control notifiable diseases and pests and to prevent the introduction of serious exotic pests and diseases. Projects currently being funded are the assessment of the effectiveness of the shook swarm method for controlling EFB and the development of a monitoring system for the small hive beetle (Aethina tumida). In addition, a 3yr PHD studentship studying bee virus started in 2007.

ROAME statement and Evidence and Innovation Strategy

All Defra research must be commissioned under a ROAME statement which provides a clear statement of the rationale and objectives of the research programme. ROAME statements must be reviewed on a regular basis. In parallel with the Bee Health Strategy, an Evidence and Innovation Strategy (E&IS) and a ROAME statement for Bee Health, have been produced. As with the Bee Health Strategy, comments are invited on the draft ROAME and E&IS.
