Professional Skills for Government (PSG)

The Cabinet Office have recently introduced the Professional Skills for Government (PSG) initiative, which aims to provide all members of the Civil Service with the skills and experience needed to design and deliver 21st century services. It is a major, long-term change programme designed to ensure that civil servants, wherever they work, have the right mix of skills and expertise to enable their Departments or agencies to deliver effective services. This is a move away from the concept of “generalist” and “specialist” to three career groupings: corporate services delivery, operational delivery, and policy delivery.

More informaton about each of these areas can be found on the Cabinet Office PSG website: www.civilservice.gov.uk/people/psg/index.aspx

The Veterinary Skills and Expertise Framework (28 KB) aims to identify those areas of skill and knowledge building which can be considered as relevant and specific for government veterinary surgeons. This framework covers the requirement at Grade 7 (equivalent), Senior Civil Service(SCS) Band 1 and SCS Band 3.
