Department of Agriculture and Rural DevelopmentThe Veterinary Service is an integral part of the Department of Agriculture & Rural Development which has statutory responsibility for the regulation of significant areas of the agri-food industry within Northern Ireland and in particular for the implementation of a large number of related European Union Directives. The Veterinary Service plays a central role in endeavouring to achieve this through the Work Programmes it undertakes.

The Veterinary Service is an integral part of the Department of Agriculture & Rural DevelopmentIt has as its aims to:

  • control and eradicate enzootic disease;

  • provide a meat hygiene service, which complies with national and international standards;

  • promote and enforce acceptable animal welfare standards;

  • facilitate export trade through the provision of veterinary assurances;

  • contribute to the control of zoonotic disease;

  • promote and encourage preventative medicine;

  • ensure the use of veterinary medicines is safe and efficacious.
