- Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (CEFAS)
CEFAS
is an internationally renowned scientific research and advisory centre
working in fisheries management, environmental protection, aquaculture
and fish health. CEFAS undertakes a wide range of research, advisory,
consultancy, monitoring and training activities. Its customer base includes
Government departments, international agencies, commercial companies and
aid organisations. CEFAS has a staff compliment of approximately 550 who
are based at three specialist laboratories (Weymouth, Lowestoft and Burnham-on-Crouch)
within the UK. The Weymouth laboratory is involved in fish disease diagnosis,
monitoring and research; it is the base for the Fish Health Inspectorate
(FHI). The FHI has the responsibility to investigate notifiable fish and
shellfish diseases, routine disease monitoring and other regulatory activities.
Veterinarians working for CEFAS are based in Weymouth and are involved
in:
- development of diagnostic tests
- fish and shellfish disease surveillance and diagnosis
- epidemiology and import risk analysis for exotic fish pathogens
- research into the treatment of fish diseases
- development of tools to assess and methods to assess the impact of
pollutants on the endocrine system of vertebrates
- in collaboration with pharmaceutical and feed companies, development
and testing of veterinary medicines, vaccines, disinfectants, feed and
feed additives destined to the aquaculture market and expert assessment
of clinical and safety data for regulatory purposes.
