About GVS - Animal Health

We are a government executive agency responsible for delivering agreed services in public health and animal health and welfare within Great Britain (GB).

We help to keep animals healthy and free from disease and ensure that they are well looked after. In turn we help ensure that animal products are also free from diseases that may affect humans or other animals that consume them.

We deliver our services mainly to keepers of livestock, who are, in general, farmers. However, many other people benefit from what we do including keepers of domestic pets, importers and exporters of animal products; consumers and the general public.

We deliver on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in England, the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD) and the Welsh Assembly Government. We work closely with them to help develop government policies that are both deliverable and focussed on outcomes, whilst being sensitive to the needs of those we deliver to.
