EU Protected Food Names Scheme - EC Regulations

The Regulations 2081/92 and 2082/92 have now been repealed. The new Regulations laying down the basis for the EU PFN schemes are:

  1. EC Regulation 509/2006 - for agricultural products and foodstuffs as traditional specialities guaranteed and;
  2. EC Regulation 510/2006 - on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs.
  3. Commission Regulation (EC) No 1898/2006 – laying down detailed rules of implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No. 510/2006 on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs.

Work on drawing up Commission Regulations laying down the detailed rules of applications for these new Council Regulations has begun. Protected names registered under the repealed council Regulations are still protected and so the following information remains relevant.

The two original Regulations are:

  1. EC Regulation 2081/92 - On the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs (PDO / PGI)
  2. EC Regulation 2037/93 - Laying down detailed rules of application of Council Regulation (EEC) No 2081/92 on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs (PDO / PGI)

These Regulations aim to provide a simpler system for the protection of food names on a geographical or traditional basis. Under these Regulations, a named food or drink registered at a European level will be given protection against imitation throughout the European Union.
