Evidence base

To help us develop the three policy options for consultation, we have used the existing evidence base and built upon it through CSF commissioned work.

Existing work

River Basin Characterisation was carried out in 2005 by the Environment Agency to identify water bodies that are unlikely to achieve the environmental objectives set out in the Water Framework Directive by 2015. More information on the characterisation process can be found on the Environment Agency website.

CSF commissioned work
  • User Manual (PDF 400 KB) This inventory developed by IGER and ADAS details 44 mitigation measures for tackling DWPA.
  • Phosphorus apportionment This project updates estimates of the relative magnitude of different sources of phosphorus to UK waters.
  • Business as Usual (PDF 900 KB). This project forecasts changes to the agricultural industry, with a particular focus on environmental impacts, up to and including 2015.
