Council of Food Policy Advisors: Reports
The Council of Food Policy Advisors (CFPA) today (14 September 2009) published its first report for Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn. A news release has been issued.
The Council has identified three priority areas to focus on:
- Defining an environmentally sustainable, healthy diet
- Government setting an example via public procurement
- A UK fruit and vegetable strategy
What is the CFPA?
-
On 6 October 2008, Hilary Benn announced that he was establishing a Council of Food Policy Advisors to provide advice on a wide range of food policy issues. This reflects the growing importance of food policy, and Defra’s new role in co-ordinating this across Government.
-
The Council is linked to government but also has a critical distance, allowing for some extra thinking to take place on challenging issues.
What is the significance of this report?
-
The CFPA is advising the Secretary of State on how to achieve the four objectives for food policy set out in the Strategy Unit’s report Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century, whilst also making practical policy recommendations
-
They are providing advice on how to achieve sustainable production, distribution and consumption of food, ensuring that it is available and affordable for all sectors of society – taking into account the effects of global trends.
What will happen next?
-
The Council have made, and will continue to make, recommendations to the Government. Their priorities are outlined in this report
-
Thanks to the continued dialogue between Ministers and Council members, significant progress has already been made on some of the key areas in the report.
-
Ministers will continue to work closely with the Council on the recommendations.
