- There is a body of both field and experimental evidence that notifiable avian viruses can spread from infected places to others in the near proximity. There is uncertainty relating to the distance that such spread can occur and to the epidemiology of avian notifiable viruses in birds of different species. Given this uncertainty and the severe consequences of escape of disease from quarantine facilities, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer has concluded the current minimum distance of 200m from other bird holdings and 400m from poultry holdings, should be maintained.
