Rodney Anderson is the Director of Fisheries in Defra, including responsibility for the Sea Fisheries Inspectorate, the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS). The work of the Fisheries Directorate is divided between the Divisions listed below.

Responsible for UK policy on EU Common Fisheries Policy issues in relation to total allowable catches and quotas, management of fishing effort, conservation of fish resources and fisheries negotiations with non-EU countries and international organisations; UK policy towards Regional Advisory Councils (RACs), and support for those RACs in which the UK has an interest; policy on environmental aspects of fisheries, including fisheries aspects of small cetaceans; customer responsibility for marine fisheries science, including the Fisheries Science Partnership; coordination of UK Presidency of the Fisheries.

Policy advice on regional, European and global marine environment issues including Marine Spatial Planning, OSPAR and the European Thematic Strategy; Development of marine planning policy; input into the Marine Bill; integrated Coastal Zone Management; Enforcement under Marine Bill; Marine Licensing Policy; lead on international negotiations related to Marine Environment and Fisheries (excluding EU and RFMOs); implementing the recommendation of the High Seas Task Force on Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated (IUU) fishing; policy development on contaminants in the marine environment, particularly in connection with the Oslo and Paris Convention and relevant EC Directives.
