e-commerce

In response to the Cabinet Office requirement for Departments to carry out e-commerce impact assessments for each sector of UK industry, the Fisheries Departments of the UK commissioned a study from ICL into the impact of e-commerce on the UK fisheries industry. Following interviews with a cross-section of players in the industry, ICL have provided a full report PDF logo (1.25 MB) together with an Executive summary PDF logo (670 KB).

The Report makes a number of challenging recommendations as to how the industry and UK fisheries management systems could benefit from grasping the opportunities provided by E-commerce technologies. Its proposals include:

  • A UK fisheries web portal to provide a one-stop shop for individually focused advice, guidance and information
  • Promulgation of best practice by technology leaders in the industry
  • Pushing forward to meet the Government's Electronic Service Delivery targets and reducing paperwork by providing alternative electronic channels for the information flows that underpin fisheries management

Potential benefits include less paperwork, more effective use of quotas and better marketing, as well as cheaper exchange of data and ideas with the fisheries departments. The portal and dissemination of best practice could help improve the competitiveness and integration of UK fisheries businesses.

On 29 October an open seminar entitled sEa-commerce was held at Newcastle Marriott Metrocentre. This was organised by the Seafish Industry Authority and the Fisheries departments and sponsored by the DTI UK ON-line initiative. At the seminar a visualisation for a UK Fisheries Portal was sucessfully presented by the ICL Ideas Group on behalf of the Fisheries Departments.

The Departments are keen to have the views of industry on the recommendations of the report and the Portal Visualisation. Please submit your views and comments to Bob Crooks, Room 412, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR or email them to him at bob.crooks@defra.gsi.gov.uk. It is hoped to be able to start work on taking forward agreed recommendations when the Departments funding levels are agreed for 2002/2003 in March 2002.
