Fisheries: about us
Working with others
The UK Fisheries Departments comprise the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Scottish Executive Environment & Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD), the National Assembly for Wales Agriculture Department (NAWAD), and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for Northern Ireland (DARD). Departments in the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are responsible for administering fishing activity in their respective areas.
As such the development of policy and control measures for UK fisheries involved a close working relationship between all Fisheries Departments. More detail on the work of the other Fisheries Departments can be found through the following links.
In addition we work closely with the Fisheries Directorate General of the European Commission. More information on the role of the European Commission including the latest information on the proposed reforms to the EU Common Fisheries Policy.
It is important that there is a sound basis for the policies implemented and decisions taken with regards to both sea and freshwater fisheries. Scientific advice is particularly important. Fisheries Departments work closely with colleagues in the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS). More information on their work can be found here
