South West Dairy Show 30 January 2008

Visitors to the South West Dairy Show last month will hopefully have noticed the range of activities around the theme of Farm Health Planning.  In addition to the display in the Mendip building demonstrating the range of Cattle Initiative projects in progress up and down the country, there were a number of presentations in the lecture theatre around themes of avoiding disease and planning for health.

The Farm Health Planning Cattle Initiative is  a Defra/Industry partnership to encourage farmers to work with their vet and advisers to measure, manage and monitor disease levels on farm.   This can involve sophisticated computer records, but paper records can be just as effective if the information is used to take action.

Vets and advisors from the Cattle initiative were on hand to answer questions from passing farmers and demonstrate the costs of disease through the use of the cost benefit models developed by Reading University.
