Wessex Positive Health Partnership
Wessex Positive Health Partnership is a group of nine veterinary practices across Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire who are working together to provide health planning advice to 44 beacon dairy farms. This 18 month project is funded by the Defra cattle health initiative. Its aims are to provide measurable improvements in herd health, providing benefits to both farmers and their cattle. Successful approaches will be promoted through on-farm events open to farmers and vets in a region where there are around two thousands dairy farms.
Farm health Planning Farm Visit Reports/ Action Plans
Action plans and reports of initial farm visits by some participating practices within this partnership are now available.
- Vet Ed Simmons targets fertility and a rising SCC on a 120 cow unit on the Somerset levels
- A 150 pedigree unit improve cow fertility and address lameness largely caused by Digital Dermatitis.
- 180 cow organic farm in Wiltshire tackles lameness, fertility and cell counts with the help of their vet
- The Delaware veterinary group plan to resolve fertility problems on a 180 cow organic herd in south Somerset.
- A 230 cow herd near Yeovil Somerset target mastitis, fertility and lameness.
- Poor daily routine and transition management issues are highlighted on a 130 cow unit in Somerset. An action plan is put in place to get to grips with the herds mastitis problem.
