Liverpool University logoFarmers see vets as trusted sources of information and so are ideal disseminators of information regarding modern animal health techniques. However, up take of health planning has been poor. Facilitation of “self learning” groups by an advisor is the most effective method to improve up take of advice. We will utilise the existing framework of private veterinary practices in the North-West and South-West who have a working relationship with their farm clients, but re-focus this towards health planning by training vets in facilitation techniques (in collaboration with the Universities of Liverpool and Bristol Veterinary Schools) and help them host meetings on farms to demonstrate how, working as a team, the vet and a group of 6-8 farmers can produce a plan to solve health problems. The key is to convince the farmer that in partnership with their vet they already have many of the answers to their problems.
