Reform of the EU fruit and vegetable regime
Political agreement on wide-ranging reform of the EU Fruit and Vegetable regime was reached in June 2007. The reforms contain a number of key elements which relate to the eligibility status under the Single Payment Scheme of land on which fruit (including orchards),vegetable crops, ware potatoes and nursery crops are grown.
A news release was issued on 29 August 2007 announcing that the option to maintain the fruit and vegetable authorisation system beyond the current year would not be taken up.
A news release was issued on 20 December 2007 announcing that land under orchards and nursery crops will become eligible under the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) from the 2009 scheme year.
A consultation exercise took place during February - May 2008 concerning the SPS aspects of the reform of the EU fruit and vegetable regime and wine regime. Following detailed consideration of consultee responses it has been decided that growers will be eligible to apply to be allocated new SPS entitlements for permanent fruit and vegetable crops, nursery crops and vines in time for payment applications under the 2010 SPS scheme year, and these entitlements will be valued at the flat rate applicable for the 2010 SPS scheme year. A news release was issued on 8 August 2008.
