Farming: Food Industry Sustainability Strategy (FISS)
Champions' Group: Food transportation
An Industry led Champions’ Group was formed to identify how the food industry can achieve significant reductions in the level of environmental and social costs associated with the domestic transportation of food. The group membership was made up of representatives from industry, government and the third sector.
The starting point for the work of this group was the key action point on food transport which can be found on page 55 of the Strategy Document (see also below). The final report of this group can be found below.
Final Report
Key FISS Action point (p55)
A reduction in the level of environmental and social costs associated with the domestic transportation of food would generate carbon savings and other benefits. Building on logistical improvements of the last decade, a process will be set up with industry to consider the practical implications associated with it securing significant reductions (say, 20% by 2012) in the level of external costs associated with the domestic transportation of food. To report back to Ministers by winter 2006.
