Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR)

United Kingdom - National Steering Committee

The National Steering Committee (NSC) on Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR) was established in 2003 as a result of recommendations in the 2002 UK Country Report on FAnGR.

The Committee’s original remit was co-ordinate the drafting and implementation of the UK National Action Plan on FAnGR in addition to advising Defra policy makers on all areas of policy that impact on FAnGR or which require input from scientific and industry experts in animal genetic resource conservation and management.

Now that Defra and the devolved agriculture departments of the UK have officially endorsed the UK National Action Plan and accepted in principle the 38 recommended actions, the National Steering Committee will become an independent expert group on FAnGR representing key stakeholder interests.

This will replace the previous ad-hoc NSC and will be principally charged with steering the implementation of the plan in addition to providing policy advice. Defra will continue to provide the secretariat and assume a co-ordinatory role.

Defra and the Devolved Administrations are currently looking to recruit members to serve on the new National Standing Committee on Farm Animal Genetic Resources which is expected to come into being in May 2007. For further information see:

The Committee will be established as a Standing Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) with participation from the devolved administrations and will have representation from animal geneticists, experts in conservation management, conservation Non-Government Organisations and mainstream species associations.
