Livestock: Pigs - Keeping Pigs

The 'New Pig Keepers' Guide' PDF (431KB) has information on keeping pigs for the first time (including information on licensing for "pet pig walking").

Movements and identification

The following information is available:

Further information is available from the local Animal Health Offices with whom you will need to register your pigs.

Animal health and welfare

The health and welfare of animals is central to Defra's work. Information is available on protecting and improving livestock welfare and controlling and eradicating disease.

Illegal imports

Information is available on reducing the risk of exotic animal diseases, plant pests and diseases entering the country and then threatening our public health, livestock, agriculture and horticultural industries and the environment.

Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC)

The main aim of IPPC is to achieve a high level of protection of the environment taken as a whole by, in particular, preventing or, where that is not practicable, reducing emissions into the air, water and land.

Pig farmers must apply to the Environment Agency for a permit to operate, if their livestock capacity exceeds:

  • 750 sows
  • 2,000 fattening pigs over 30kg

The following posters have been published by ADAS in conjunction with Defra as guidance to intensive livestock pig operators.

IPPC model templates

Additional information

Information specifically for farmers is available from the Environment Agency and Defra also has further general information on IPPC.

A series of model application templates have been prepared to aid pig farmers applying for a permit to operate under the IPPC Regulations. These models can be accessed via the BPEX website.

A series of factsheets communicating Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) information to farmers has been published, see:

Further information is available on our Help page about downloading or reading Adobe Acrobat PDF documents.
