Sugar - EC Management Committee
The Common Organisation of the Market for Sugar and Isoglucose gives the European Commission considerable discretion to set detailed rules for its operation, determine export refunds and to operate intervention buying. However in most circumstances the Commission is required to consult the Management Committee for Sugar in exercising these powers.
The Management Committee is chaired by the Commission and consists of representatives from each Member State. Decisions are by show of hands voting with Member States having a number of votes related to their size. The chair does not vote.
Meetings take place about 24 times a year and can involve both standard agenda items, such as decisions on tenders and more fundamental changes to the market management mechanisms which are used, such as the consolidation or amendment of Commission Regulations.
