What we do

  • The Committee’s principal role is to provide advice to Government and interested parties on issues relating to farm animal genetic resources (FAnGR) and to oversee implementation of the UK’s 2006 National Action Plan on FAnGR (PDF 1MB).
  • The Committee is represented by; animal geneticists, experts in conservation management, Non-Government Organisations and mainstream species associations.
  • We encourage the conservation and sustainable use of FAnGR and help to set research and development priorities.
  • We advise on in situ and ex situ conservation programmes.
  • We act as a forum for stakeholders to talk about issues related to conservation and sustainable use of FAnGR.
  • We also give advice to other UK conservation programmes interested in FAnGR and evaluate their work. This will include liaising with livestock organisations and other National Committees’ programmes concerned with genetic resources in food and agriculture in the plant and microbial kingdoms.
