Statistics

Defra recognises the central importance of being able to use and publish high quality, accessible statistical information and then being able to analyse this information as a key part of policy development.  The Department’s Government Statisticians provide this capability and are key to Defra’s ability to understand and develop data sources, in order to support the policy making process.

Statisticians are also at the heart of our links with both the European Union (EU) and a wide range of external stakeholders. Publicly accessible datasets cover agriculture, food, fisheries, the environment and sustainable development and include:

  • Food and farming statistics
Including our key publication "Agriculture in the United Kingdom", the summary "UK Agricultural Statistics in your pocket", "Food statistics in your pocket", detailed farm statistics and the Farm Business Survey, and UK Sea Fisheries Statistics
  • Environment and wildlife statistics

Statistics on the environment in the United Kingdom, including air quality, coastal and marine waters, inland water quality and use, land use and land cover, waste and recycling, noise, UK Environmental Protection Expenditure, and Public Behaviour and Attitudes towards the environment. Currently this section also covers wildlfe statistics, and climate change and radioactivity material now covered by DECC.

  • Rural and countryside statistics
Information both as interactive querying and mapping facilities through our Rural Evidence Hub (REH) and as ‘off-the-shelf’ information in the form of reports and maps, the rural atlas, definitions and descriptions.
