Key Facts about: Supplementary Information
Expenditure on biodiversity: 2000/1-2007/8
United Kingdom
Spending is one way of assessing the priority that is given to biodiversity within Government.
In 2007-8, £525 million pounds of public sector funding was spent on UK biodiversity, more than double what was spent in 2000-1. Over the same period UK GDP increased by 19 per cent.
For the purpose of this measure only biodiversity related grant money and programme expenditure has been included. The above figures do not include any associated operational costs.
This indicator is derived from work to establish indicators for the amount of expenditure on biodiversity in the UK and globally. The indicators are based on a combination of expert opinion and published and unpublished estimates from both public sector and non-Governmental organisations. These sources were used to obtain estimates of spending on biodiversity between 2000/01 and 2007/08, where possible distinguishing between:
- spending directly on reserves and conservation measures;
- related spending on administration and training;
- relevant research and development;
- whether the spending is direct on biodiversity, or through transfer payments to other organisations (in order to remove double counting of financial flows);
Note: Deflated using implied UK GDP deflator
