Science is at the heart of good policy making at Defra, providing evidence for decision-making, helping us find new policy solutions and helping us to identify and tackle future issues.

Defra is a major funder of science, spending over £300 million annually on research, monitoring and surveillance activities.

We believe that good quality science is crucial in maintaining the high quality of the work we do for the essentials of life - water, food, air, land, people, animals and plants.
