Agri-environment schemes within SSSIs - 2003/4 data by Joint Character Area
Agri-environment schemes report
This annually produced report is in its fourth year and benefits from close joint working between RDS and English Nature (now united in Natural England) to report on the condition of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) that are managed by Agri-environment funding schemes in each financial year. The results of the analysis are used to inform and steer the efforts to meet the PSA Target which is to bring 95% (by area) of SSSIs into favourable or recovering condition by 2010.
Next year the new Higher Level funding scheme begins and agreements will begin to transfer over into this targeted funding process. One way in which the targeting will be prioritised is through the use of Joint Character Areas (JCA - also called Landscape or Countryside Character Areas).

Joint Character Areas
Joint Character Areas were first devised as a means of describing the essential character of distinct areas of the English Countryside, based on the landscape, wildlife and natural features.
More information on the definitions which lie behind each Joint Character Area will be available here in summary form here as Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents, or they can be viewed in more detail on the Natural England website.
