Making the most of your ELS Options
Defra, in discussion with other Government agencies, has outlined the key characteristics of the different parts of the English countryside, by defining over 150 Joint Character Areas; your land will be covered by one of these areas. Each area has priority targets for the management of a variety of features.
These notes give short descriptions of your local area, identifying characteristic landscape, wildlife and historic features, and identifies which options will deliver benefits that are particularly relevant to your land. This description may help you to choose which options to include in your application. When you apply to join Entry Level Stewardship, you will be sent a copy of the guidance note relating to your area.
A map showing the location of the individual character areas is available [400KB], and further background information, including detailed descriptions of each character area is available on the Countryside Agency website.
To view guidance on making the most of your ELS options specific to your area, either choose the region, county or character area your land is situated in from the menus below, or click the appropriate part of the map. The guidance information is provided in Adobe Reader
format. All files are between 40 and 60 KB.
Please note that character areas can overlap county and regional borders. You may find that the character area you are interested in will cover two or more counties or regions as a result. If you live near a county or regional border and cannot find a particular character area, you could also check neighbouring counties and regions for further information.
