What is the English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS)?
The EWGS is part of the Defra family of environmental support operated by the Forestry Commission under the England Rural Development Programme (ERDP). The purpose of the scheme is to develop the co-ordinated delivery of public benefits from England’s woodlands.
There are six grant types within the EWGS, which fall into two broad categories – stewardship and creation. The grant scheme has a regional basis with regional funding.
The objectives of the EWGS are:
- to sustain and increase the public benefits derived from existing woodlands in England
- to invest in the creation of new woodland in England of a size, type and location that most effectively delivers public benefits.
Applications for grants under EWGS must deliver key targets by:
- increasing and maintaining the area of woodland under certified sustainable forest management and approved management schemes
- expanding the area of woodland with public access
- bringing woodland SSSIs into favourable condition
- assisting delivery of Priority Habitat and Species Action Plans for woodlands
- improving the environment of disadvantaged urban communities
- woodland creation
What are the benefits?
The England Rural Development Programme provides incentives for people to create and manage woodlands throughout England. The Forestry Commission pays grants for establishing and looking after woodlands and forests because of the benefits well managed woodlands give to society.
Woodlands give people a place to go and enjoy the countryside, especially if they are close to towns and cities. They are a major part of the landscape and provide essential habitats for much of our wildlife. Woodlands also make a large contribution to meeting our growing demand for timber and play an important part in the economy, providing jobs and economic benefit for rural communities.
