Payment Rates

Each ESA has one or more tiers of entry and each tier requires different agricultural practices to be followed. Typically, higher tiers have higher payment rates than the base tier, but impose more conditions on farmers and achieve greater environmental benefits.

Land entered into an ESA may, at Defra's discretion, be eligible for an additional payment if it is agreed to allow new public access to it. This will only be available on enclosed land that is particularly suitable for walking and quiet enjoyment by the public. Payments for access will be available on strips 10 metres wide, which may either run along the side(s) of a field or across it. There is further information available at the Public Access section.
