Section 9.4 - Agri-environment measure

(Note: the following text replaces the existing section 9.4 of the ERDP)

9.4.1 Articles 22 - 24 of Regulation 1257/1999 provide for support to be granted for agricultural production methods designed to protect the environment and to maintain the countryside. Such support will contribute to the Community’s policy objectives regarding agriculture and the environment.

9.4.2 This agri-environment measure has been implemented under the ERDP, since 2000, by three agri-environment schemes:

  1. Organic Farming Scheme (OFS);
  2. Countryside Stewardship Scheme (CSS);
  3. Environmentally Sensitive Areas Scheme (ESAS)

9.4.3 However, in 2005 they will be replaced by one new scheme: (D) Environmental Stewardship (ES) incorporating three levels. The existing schemes will close to new applications at the launch of Environmental Stewardship. The three levels of ES will be Entry Level Stewardship (ELS), Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) and Higher Level Stewardship (HLS).

9.4.4 The points in paragraphs 9.4.5 – 9.4.15 below apply to all the schemes. They are followed by sections setting out the detailed objectives and arrangements, which are specific to each of the schemes.
