“The Rural Enterprise Scheme grant has enabled us to convert some redundant farm buildings into sustainable enterprises, adding value and promoting the link between consumers and producers whilst also improving the viability of our family farm.”

The grant has also funded new toilets and washroom facilities on the farm in order to provide a service to visitors to the shop. The facilities will also complement the farm’s award winning Educational Access walk partly funded by Defra’s Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

Manor Farm is situated in the North West Leicestershire village of Long Whatton, and produces organic beef, lamb, vegetables and arable crops and sells these together with a whole range of organically produced food products through the existing shop.

Graeme and Vivienne Matravers realised that they needed to diversify into new areas if they were to improve the farm’s performance and overall profitability. This project was chosen because it fitted well with their own aims and objectives of promoting the benefits of organic production.

The farm shop and bakery will provide an important service to local residents and visitors to the area as it will offer them the opportunity to buy good quality local produce and complement this with a wide selection of fresh breads and baked products.

Graeme & Vivienne are confident that by expanding their range of locally sourced organic meat, fresh produce and baked products, the shop will become popular with locals and visitors alike.
