Groundwater (Water Framework Directive) Direction 2006
The Secretary of State and National Assembly for Wales in exercise of powers under section 40(2) of the Environment Act 1995 have given a Direction to the Environment Agency in relation to criteria for:
(a ) assessing groundwater chemical status, and
(b) the identification of significant and sustained upward trends and for the definition of starting points for trend reversals
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires Member States to adopt such measures under Article 17(4), within five years of coming into force of the WFD, in the absence of criteria adopted at European level.
The Direction is intended to be a temporary measure pending the introduction, and transposition, of a new groundwater directive further to Article 17(1) of the Water Framework Directive. The Environment Agency were formally consulted on the Direction prior to its implementation.
In due course, the Environment Agency will undertake a consultation in connection with the preparation of the above criteria.
