Nitrates - maps of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones

Maps of NVZs designated in 2002

Detailed 'field boundary' maps of the existing NVZs (designated in 2002) are available. These fully interactive maps show all fields as either wholly within or wholly outside the existing NVZ areas. You are provided with the option of printing out the NVZ maps in your area. The Interactive NVZ Maps are provided and hosted for Defra under contract by ADAS.

Note: A detailed description of the steps taken to identify the NVZs in England is provided in the downloadable document "Description of the methodology applied by the Secretary of State in identifying additional NVZs in England 2002"

Maps of NVZs proposed for designation in 2008

A recent review of the existing NVZs indicates that we need to increase coverage to about 70% of England.  Regulations formally designating these NVZs are expected to be laid before Parliament in September 2008.

More detailed maps of the proposed NVZs are available on this website:

  • Regional maps
  • Interactive ‘field boundary’ maps - available from September 2008.

A summary map showing the extent of the existing NVZs (blue areas) and the proposed extension of NVZs (pink areas) in England is available below.
