MERMAN the Marine Environment Monitoring and Assessment National Database

MERMAN fulfils the data storage and access requirements of the Clean Seas Environmental Monitoring Programme (formally NMMP) which provides data for national assessments and the UK's contribution to International agreements.

Data is collected at approximately 80 sites around the UK (see map below) and quality assured by participation in national and international quality assurance initiatives. The programme has been running since 1990 and data holdings currently include:

  • Trace metals, organic contaminants and particle size data in sediment;
  • Trace metals, organic contaminants and bioeffects in biota;
  • Trace metals, organic contaminants and nutrients in water;
  • Riverine discharge data on nutrients and contaminants; and
  • Benthic invertebrates data.

How to access the data

If you would like to have access to data held in MERMAN please contact the Database Manager at the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), who manage the database on behalf of the contributing Departments and Devolved Administrations. Registered users may access MERMAN via the Defra secure applications portal.Image showing the front cover of the second NMMP report
