Strategy for marine monitoring

Marine Assessment and Reporting Group (MARG)

The UKMMAS is implemented through a number of groups, responsible for specific aspects but with dialogue between groups and subject to overall direction by the Marine Assessment and Reporting Group (MARG). The sub-groups which report directly to MARG are as follows:

  • Clean and Safe Seas Evidence Group
  • Healthy and Biologically Diverse Seas Evidence Group
  • Productive Seas Evidence Group
  • Marine Protocols Group

The purpose of MARG is to decide how best to carry out assessments to fulfil the policy requirements with existing resource and scientific knowledge, direct the implementation of suitable programmes, review the outcomes and assessments and suggest changes to the programme when necessary.

The 'Full' MARG group meet on a six-monthly basis to ensure the requests from MAPC and the advice and work programmes of the Evidence Collection Groups are embedded across the UK monitoring organisations. Between meetings of the 'Full' group, a smaller group, composed primarily of the Chairs of the Marine Protocols and Evidence Collection Groups, Defra and the Scottish Executive, meet to maintain the momentum of the process and achieve the ambitious work programme . However, these meetings are not exclusive and all members of MARG are welcome to attend these 'Mini' MARG meetings if they wish to do so.
