Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy

Reflections Event - June 2007

On 26 June 2007, Defra’s Waste Evidence Branch (WEB) hosted a stakeholder Reflections Event to introduce its draft Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy 2007-2011, and to gain feedback on the overall approach proposed to scoping, procuring, assembling and interpreting the evidence base to inform waste and resource policy. The event sought to obtain stakeholders’ views on emerging research priorities and input for future research projects. The event was attended by some 100 participants, representing a cross-section of stakeholders from across the UK.  The Reflections Event was an important input to both the development of the Evidence Strategy and the next phase of the Waste and Resources Evidence Programme (WREP).  

Presentations and discussions from the day included:

• a brief history of Defra’s Waste and Resources Evidence Programme
• an overview of the Waste Strategy for England 2007 with particular emphasis on the evidence needed to support its implementation
• an introduction to the Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy 2007-2011
• the purpose of the day’s breakout sessions and expected outputs
• a strategic overview of Defra science, research and analysis by Defra’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Sir Howard Dalton
• a lively plenary discussion about the nature and types of research needed under the new evidence strategy

In addition, eight breakout sessions were held throughout the day where stakeholders provided invaluable input and generated over 25 research ideas and projects. The session topics included:

• sustainable resource consumption and management
• cost and benefit of waste management interventions
• key materials
• resource flow
• stimulating investment in waste collection and treatment
• producer responsibility
• risk assessment / exposure assessment
• third (community) sector
