New technologies - the Demonstrator Programme

The Demonstrator Programme

arming key decision makers with the facts and realities of implementing new technologies and empowering them to make informed decisions.

Defra launched this £30 million programme to demonstrate innovative waste treatments technologies as possible alternatives to landfill. The programme aims to prove the economic, social and environmental viability (or not) of each selected technology. There will be a series of impartial reports, presentations and advice from experts working on behalf of Defra.

Visitor centres

Each New Technologies Demonstrator Programme (NTDP) site will have a visitor centre which will be open throughout the plant’s participation in the programme.  These will enable representatives from local authorities and the waste sector to see the sites operating and to learn more about the particular strengths and weaknesses of the technologies.  Key decision makers will be better equipped to make informed choices about the waste treatment options which best suit their communities.

The programme offers flexibility when planning a site visit and will work together with the visiting party to develop an itinerary to suit their specific requirements, offering:

  • briefings
    • NTDP, sites and technologies
    • introduction and background information on the technology type
    • site-specific processes and experiences
    • the Local Authority perspective
    • the planning considerations
  • site tours
  • catering
  • disabled access
  • provisions for the hearing impaired

The projects

Following two rounds of bidding and around 90 applications, assessed and reviewed by the Waste Technologies Advisory Committee, nine projects covering a variety of different waste treatment technologies were agreed.

In total there are eight remaining projects located across the length and breadth of England covering a variety of different waste treatment technologies.
