New technologies supporter training course
The supporter programme has developed an exciting new training course for all levels and personnel who play a part in the waste decision making process in local authorities. The free training course will contribute to the development of knowledge and skills to enable authority officers to evaluate technologies and provide objective advice as part of a decision making process, for the treatment of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW) that will reduce the UK’s reliance on landfill. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and represents 18 hours for the purposes of continuing professional development (CPD) and 3 days for the CIWM Structured Education & Training Scheme.
Course structure
The course is structured into 6 key units concluding with a decision making exercise to enable all participants to demonstrate the learning outcomes of the course. The units will be taught over 3 days as follows:
Day 1
Unit 1: New and Emerging Technologies for the Treatment of BMW: A Technical Review
Day 2
Unit 2: Costs, Finance and Bankability
Unit 3: Procurement
Unit 4: Licensing & Permitting
Day 3
Unit 5: Land Use Planning and Planning Consent
Unit 6: Exercise in Decision Making
On completion of these units, attendees will have an improved all round knowledge and a full set of decision making skills for implementing new waste technologies. In particular you will be able to:
- Identify, describe and critically evaluate new waste technologies
- Apply mass balances and evaluate the social and environmental impacts
- Compare costs of the various new technologies
- Knowledge for technology selection, contract procurement and risk assessment
- Input into the management of the technology outputs and process residues, and their implications in respect of LATS
- Understand what planning issues relate to the different technologies and manage the main challenges to gaining planning permissions

Anyone in a local authority who will play a role in the decision making process for implementing waste technologies into their region. This should be:
